Term: July 2 – August 31, 2012
Hours: 35 hours per week, Mon-Fri, with some weekend and evening work

The Green Timbers Heritage Society is hiring 1 Habitat Restoration Junior Team Member for the Surrey Natural Areas Partnership (SNAP) summer program. The SNAP program is a unique partnership involving three local non-profit groups and Surrey Parks, Recreation & Culture. The goals of the program are to: 1) restore and enhance Surrey’s natural area parks; 2) provide environmental education to the community; 3) encourage the public to become stewards of natural areas; and 4) raise awareness and promote the care of boulevard trees. Through this program, the successful applicants will receive training and experience in environmental restoration and habitat enhancement techniques. The Habitat Restoration Team Members will work on restoration and enhancement projects within Surrey’s natural area parks under the direction of a Team Leader. This is a field based position.

Duties
- Assist with restoration of natural areas (e.g. removal of invasive plant species, park clean-ups, wildlife projects, trail closures, planting maintenance)
- Occasionally assist other SNAP teams with staffing environmental displays at special events, leading community stewardship events, and other educational outreach
- Communicate with the public and park neighbours

Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma (current Grade 12 students are eligible for this position)
- Demonstrated willingness to perform repetitive, physical work in all weather
- Valid Level 1 First Aid Certification will be required as a condition of employment
- Completion of a criminal record check will be required as a condition of employment
- Must have steel toed boots

Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of Biology 11 or 12, Geography 11 or 12, Earth Sciences or related classes
- Planning to attend post-secondary school in Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, Geography or related discipline
- Strong public relations and interpersonal skills
- Ability to ID native and invasive plants and knowledge of ecological principles
